Happy Friday!

We have worked hard during this first full week of school.

We began the week with our spelling pre-test and continued our spelling homework all week. We will complete the week with our first graded spelling test. If you have any concerns or questions regarding spelling homework, please let me know.

The class spent time reviewing how to read a clock to the nearest hour, half and quarter hours, as well as down to the minute. We calculated elapsed time and determined how long our morning is. Math homework will continue to come home most nights. If you have any questions or concerns regarding math homework, please let me know.

We started our reading groups this week.

In Social Studies we continued our maps and globes unit. We learned about all seven continents, the north and south poles, the equator and even the hemispheres. Ask your student about Mrs. Harrington drawing on an orange!

A reminder that the Lincoln Street Open House is next Thursday from 6:30-8. I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can. We will discuss class routines, content areas, and student expectations.

Please feel free to reach out if you have questions. jharrington@sau16.org or 775-8897

Have a great weekend!

We have finished another week ! The students and I have continued to get to know each other, as well as continuing to learn and practice the rules and routines of Lincoln Street School and the classroom. The students are doing a great job and are working hard!

This week we began both our math homework and our spelling homework routine. Moving forward, students will typically have one page of math homework and one page of spelling homework, each night, Monday - Thursday. The math homework will consist of continued practice of that day's lesson. The spelling homework can range from ABC order, to writing sentences, word boxes, crosswords or word finds. Homework should be returned the following day. Students should also be free reading for 15 minutes a night and working toward mastery of their addition and subtraction math facts. Thank you for your support on homework. If you have an questions about homework or it is a struggle for your child to complete, please reach out and let me know!

We began our unit on Maps and Globes. The students have been learning the cardinal directions and have created a compass rose! We will continue learning about the continents, the oceans, hemispheres and poles.

Our reading groups should begin within the next week or so. In the meantime, we have been reading about Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill. We have been reviewing and learning strategies for close reading and have worked together to answer some comprehension questions.

Thank you again to all who have sent in money for Scholastic News! If you have not, I am still accepting $6.53 for each subscription.

I will be sending home directions today about making a person book. In class we will work to write All About Me poems to place on the inside of our person. We hope to have these ready for open house.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!
Have a wonderful weekend!

We have made it through our first week! The kids and I have been busy getting to know each other. The students have spent time playing name bingo, interviewing their classmates, and graphing our class birthdays. We played an iSpy game to explore our classroom. Together as a group we created our class rules to help establish a fun, safe and engaging learning environment. The students have spent time learning the class routines, which we will continue to practice for the next few weeks. We have a wonderful class!

Next week we will begin to settle into more routine. The students will begin spelling and math, both will include nightly homework. Students can expect about one page of math per night, which will represent continued practice of our daily lesson. Students will have one page of spelling homework per night. Homework will come home a blue folder, which should be returned daily.

On Wednesday, I sent home information about Scholastic News. Scholastic News is a current events magazine that is utilized in the classroom weekly. The students will read non-fiction stories that fun, engaging, and curriculum based. The school year cost is $6.53 per student. Additionally this cost will include a monthly Science Spin.

Student Council elections will be held next Tuesday. We spoke about the role of the Student Council representative. Students who expressed interest were sent home with information regarding this, as well as the understanding they will need to write a speech that will be read to their classmates.

A few reminders:

Students have snack every morning. Please remember to send a snack in daily. Students can also bring in water bottles that can be refilled at the water fountain.

Lunch money can be sent in daily. Please place money in a sealed envelope or bag and label it with the student's first and last name. Students may also purchase milk or water, when available, when bringing cold lunch.

Thank you for all your generous donations to the class. We are always in need of disinfectant wipes!

I am looking forward to settling in next week and getting to know your children even more. Again, we have a great class full of eager learners!
